What Power Station is Right for Me?

Why Purchase a Portable Power Station?

A power station is a great option to have when you need mobile power. Because of their general size, weight, and output options, portable power stations can be used for a variety of applications. From outdoor recreational uses, to powering small homes and trailers, remote job sites, and even in emergency situations, having a mobile power solution means the electrical appliances you need or want to use will continue to work, regardless of the setting. One thing to note is that depending on the make and model, capacities and features, their prices can vary, and even be a barrier to entry for some. Though having a portable power station doesn’t have to be an expensive purchase, buying a quality, reliable solution can be a worthwhile investment.

Outdoor Use

Whether it’s at the beach, a campsite in the mountains, or even out in your backyard, having a power station could make your outdoor experience more comfortable and enjoyable. Powering things like phones, fans, lights, speakers, pumps, or even mini fridges to keep your drinks and food cold. Depending on the make, model, and manufacturer of the power generator, some even have the capability to have solar panels connected to charge the unit even while it’s being used.

Small / Tiny Homes, Trailers, Van Life

Though only making up only a small percentage of people, there’s still a growing number of individuals who are choosing to scale down their living spaces and move into trailers and tiny homes. Not to mention the number of people who are buying vans, buses, and other vehicles specifically to turn them into their own home on wheels. For many of those applications, having not only one, but multiple power stations means that some sacrifices won’t have to be made. You could power laptops and desktop computers to work remotely, TV’s, and gaming consoles for entertainment, or just have the essentials like a fridge and other kitchen appliances. Depending on the capacity of the power station and the draw of the appliance, some items could run all day, if not longer.

Job Sites

The need for readily available, convenient, and portable power can even apply to your work environment. Even in more ideal settings like the office, outlets aren’t always in a convenient spot. This is more so exaggerated for anyone working in more remote or unconventional job locations. Places like construction sites could have their tools easily powered when electricity isn’t within reach. Commercial Field Reps who either don’t have, or aren’t at their desk for most of the time could benefit from having a power source to charge laptops and other field equipment needed to perform their job tasks. Creatives like photographers and videographers who travel from venue to venue can keep their camera, flash, and other device batteries topped up and ready to go. Ultimately, anyone who is constantly on the go more for business than pleasure can also gain convenience and comfort from purchasing a power station.

Emergencies

We rarely, if ever get to plan for how and when things go wrong. Earthquakes, floods, storms, and various other natural disasters can leave many without power for extended periods of time. That is when having a power station can mean the difference between being cold and in the dark, and having those amenities still available to you. Keep your phone charged to stay in contact with first responders, family, and friends. If infrastructure is still intact, keep your modem or wireless router running to use as a way to communicate if cell towers are down. Heaters and fans can be powered to keep you comfortable, and any medical equipment that you might have could also be kept running without much, if any, interruption.

Some power stations have the capability to be used as a UPS. UPS’s, or Uninterrupted Power Supplies, can be used to keep your devices powered on even in the event of an unexpected power outage. By plugging your devices first into the power station, then plugging the power station to your home outlet. Should the power go out, your devices will stay running, drawing from the power station instead.

How to Choose Between Different Power Stations

With so many options available, which power station is right for you? That will ultimately depend on your needs and use cases. Though getting the largest power station might have you covered for anything you can think of, they can be pricey and may not be quite as portable as smaller alternatives. On the other hand, getting the smallest power solution might make it easy to tote around, though you may end up severely limited on what you can and can’t power from it. So understanding what you’re hoping to power and where plays a pretty big role in making that decision. Do you need something by your desk to charge your phone? Or maybe need something to keep in your car that won’t take up much space? Are you currently building out a van or bus and don’t want to have to chain heavy acid batteries together?

Understanding your end goals and use cases can help narrow down your choices and ease your mind with your purchase. Whatever your needs are, Sasquatch Outdoor has a range of power stations to fit most scenarios.
